Las Cuatro Milpas Reviews

Visiting this institution is such a special experience. The place feels like an old school cafeteria, no frills, just homey real food. Everything is fantastic, but get the rolled tacos, and sit down with some folks who have been coming here for 60 years. Take some tortillas home because these babies are not like what you get at the grocery store. We visited twice, both on Monday mornings, and we had no trouble finding street parking and there was no line.

This is a must-go when in San Diego. The atmosphere is old school, and you can tell that it is a local institution (the long lines are a testament to that). Once you get to the front service is quick and very kind. The food speaks for itself, it is simple but so so good! Get a dozen tortillas to take home because you’ll be wanting more once you leave.

San Diego Taco Series, Part 1
When it comes to this series, there is no messing around. We are forwarding the season directly to the All Star Game.

If there is a fabric to San Diego, then Las Quatro Milpas must be woven within it. They first opened their doors in the Barrio Logan neighborhood in 1933 and figured out a very long time ago exactly what they are about. Although their menu options are limited, what they do offer may just help you travel back in time a little. For one of our Review Team Members it brought her back to the days of “Mama Chova” (her Grandmother) and “Tia” (her Aunt). Believe me when I tell you that’s high praise. ????

Now let’s get the disclaimers out of the way. Finding a parking spot will be a challenge, there will likely be a line of people waiting to get in, they have no air conditioning, they close when the food runs out (typically early afternoon), and they accept cash only. However, the solutions are easy peasy. Wear comfortable walking shoes, take some selfies while waiting to enter, wear shorts, make this a lunch designation, and pack some Benjamin’s.

And that’s…Henry’s Take.

My favorite and the reason why I come here is the Chorizo con Huevos. Served with homemade tortillas made on-site, this is da' bomb! The other items on the menu are ok, although the tamales with beans are pretty good. Haven't tried the Menudo, but tried most everything else. This is one of my go to places when I'm in the area. Lunch crowd on weekdays can make for long lines, but ladies running the show make quick work of getting food to everyone, so lines move fast. Parking is a challenge, so be forewarned if you come here during the rush. Been coming here for years and the quality of the food has remained consistent.

The most authentic Mexican Grandmas simple home dishes you can taste. My favorite every time is the rice and beans, and the rolled tacos. Those ladies are sweet, generous, and authentic Mexican aunt vibes. Keep supporting!

Simple, home cooking. Rice, beans, a crunchy taco. Go here when you miss mama! Relax, look at the people, enjoy the food and the homemade tortillas. The taco with pork is best with the chili sauce given at the front counter.

A San Diego icon. Authentic Mexican food like mi abuelita used to make. I’ve been coming here for years and yes there is always a line for a reason.

Incredible beans and rice with chorizo and the rolled pork tacos were delicious. The tortillas had an excellent texture and great for eating the beans and rice.

Getting my San Diego history lesson here. Haven’t heard about this place until my son told us about. It’s a must try when you come to San Diego. Las Cuatro Milpas is an establishment in San Diego. Everyone is talking about their tacos and tamales.

After reading the Yelp reviews, we came early to try to beat the crowd. But we were still too late. Took us almost half an hour to get to the ordering counter. Once we get there, the ordering process was fast. The chorizo egg was delicious and authentically Mexican. You have to wrap your own fillings in a provided tortilla. Unlike other California style breakfast chorizo with eggs, this one has rice and very wet sauce. The taco was fried and filled with tasty meat and bean. The most popular item here is the tamale. The taste of the tamale is so unique. Lastly, the tortillas were all home made and the texture is soft and chewy. We got ourselves two dozens to take home.

You can also dine in here but prepare to experience the hole in the wall environment. Parking is in the street and prepare walk quite a distance.
