Raisu Reviews

The fish isn't fresh at all! When I first started going to Raisu (pre pandemic) the quality was fine, however I've gone a few times this year and was disappointed every time. I really wanted this place to be good because it's close to my house.

Update: My last visit was on July 7th at 6pm. We started with the edamame. It was overcooked and the soybeans were hard. Finally, we ordered 9 pieces of nigiri. The fish was soft and had an odd smell. The rice was also hard. After tasting the nigiri we decided to get the check and go to another sushi restaurant.

Really good sushi. Expertly crafted but man it's expensive.

Ramen was great! The wait was a little long for 2 people on a weekend. Service is fast and helpful for recommendations.

This is my second time at Raisu, we tried out the Omakases this time and it was pretty disappointing.

7 out of the 15 courses were all just different variety of salmons and tuna (including the handroll). A few other courses were Eel, hamachi, all of these nigiri were all in the cheaper price point. There were no uni, sweet shrimp, wagyu A5 handroll, squid etc. The other 4 courses were the appetizers and dessert, which were the best part of the whole experience.

Our bill was $315+ for 2 people with tips. I would be gladly to pay that much if the sushi was worth it. I have been to other Omakases' places, and this was the worst out of all the ones I been to in Chicago.

I’m gluten free and they were so accommodating and informed on it! Definitely a place you can trust with your needs. The food is also delicious and worth the price. Atmosphere is nice too.

Came here bc it was walking distance from my apt and we were so happy with how amazing the signature makis!

Inferno dragon is a must to grab when you’re here!

Great place in the neighborhood for great sushi and great service. The chef even made a special request roll! While we were there our waiter raced out the door to return a forgotten credit card to another customer. Super nice!

Our second visit. Just as amazing as first. I'm sure of many more visits to come.

Amazingly fresh sushi. Melt in your mouth. Great appetizers: we had the golden calamari and the tuna tartare. We then had three rolls: spider maki, spicy tuna maki, and unagi maki. We ended with a signature roll Tornado.

Raisu was absolutely delicious! One of our favorite sushi places in the Chicago area. The fish was fresh and perfectly cut. Sushi rice was on-point too, as clearly expected by their fish quality. We got almost exclusively Nigiri, some of the best in the city. The staff was extremely friendly, had tons of suggestions, and was very professional. It was pretty empty, which we were surprised about. Only one other couple there! Although it was a week night. It was pretty pricey here, I'd say just a little overpriced, but the quality of the food makes the price feel better. Would recommend for a fancy night out!

Lovely restaurant with delicious high quality sushi. Everything we tasted was wonderful. The prices for bottles of saki and wine was pricey! The waitstaff was friendly and efficient. Look forward to coming again soon.

I had this on my “try list” and coming back from a week long business trip, eating too much red meat, I was craving sushi. Making reservations was a breeze using opentable app. All the food was very good and the nigiri was super fresh and always nice when the rice amount is just perfect. I tend to judge Japanese restaurants by the quality of their tamago. I’m always disappointed at restaurants that have the cheap purchased tamago. Raisu tamago was very tasty! Had to order a second serving.

As for prices, I found it to be very reasonable. I’m actually surprised by the other reviews that said it was pricey. As a reference point, the yellowtail nigiri was $4 a piece….so pretty standard price but for nice quality.

This is a cozy place with good variety for the location. It's not true fine dining, but it's not casual either. The atmosphere provides a chill night or a romantic date night. Food is definitely good, some a bit more gimmicky than others, but what/where isn't nowadays. Let's break down the meal in its' entirety. I've been here before for their Omakase 101 (beginner) which was well good but I decided to go from their direct menu this time. The only real grip I have about this place is their plating is kind of absurd. The portion size to the plate scaling is ridiculously unnecessary. It takes up a lot of space if you're at a small table with a lot of food. Their special nigiri is a must so you can see how the head sushi chef puts a spin on traditional nigiri. If they have Uni, order it, you won't regret it. Their scallop sashimi is good too. Now, whether or not their Wagyu is worth or not, is up to you and your wallet. I opted for their handroll just because I was in the mood for it. The roll was not my idea, but my dining companion's (gimmicky) but taste wise, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best thing ever either. Finally, for the other three items I ordered: squid, chicken and spider (softshell crab wrapped in cucumber). All three were good individually as they were, the squid (D.D.R.) unfortunately has changed since my last dining experience. It used to come with a salad and no longer does not, which is a bit saddening. The wings were fine; think of karaage but bone-in. I do have one gripe with all three of these dishes though: overuse of teriyaki sauce for decoration; drizzle it on the plate not the food itself.

Visited again after 3-4 years. Just nice restaurant worth any visit.

My favorites are the shrimp, scallop and mochi dessert with Macaron. All of the dishes are great! I really admire the idea to cook head and tail of one shrimp in two ways. Fantastic!!!

Time between dishes are just short/long enough. Waiters are gentle and polite. Price is great for a Japanese fine dining.

I wish the restaurant and owner could always have great business. Hope the whole restaurant can last for many many years.

Why not? Of course!
