I’ve always passed by Tanuki but never gave it a try until last week and I was very pleasantly surprised with the yummiest spicy miso soup I’ve ever had that I had to order a second! I love sushi and this was one of the freshest I’ve had in a long time. It’s thinly rolled in rice so the rice isn’t overpowering and you can taste the flavors of the sushi. I absolutely loved all the sushi but the Philly salmon roll was succulent with a hint of smokey flavor. I’m already craving the spicy miso soup and their maki rolls. I can’t wait to try other options on the menu. They all sound so delicious. The service was a bit slow but very attentive server and def worth it! I’m definitely be a repeat customer :)
Good sushi for a fair price and the delivery was ahead of schedule (ordered from their website), which is always welcome. Only bummer, ordered real wasabi which was only $3 so not the end of the world, but in the container which is already small, discovered there was just a thin layer of real wasabi on top of a full container of the traditional wasabi paste. Spicy miso soup was sneaky one of my favorites too.

First time ordering from this place: ordered 2 rolls online for a quick dinner. left a tip. came in 5 minutes after the order completed time which was texted to me and my order was still not ready. no big deal. I missed where I could add additional spicy mayo and asked if I could add it to the order. the servicer told me it would have to be cash only. I had $2 on me but 1 spicy mayo was $3.30 in cash. yikes. The specialty dragon roll was filled with cucumber which I don't eat. If you are going to have ingredients that fills 1/3 of a roll you should at least have it listed in the description. big disappointment all around.

Take out review:
Decent sushi for a decent price. Their regular rolls were filling and had just enough fish to keep me satisfied. Their specialty rolls were $20+ so even though it was delicious... not tryna break the bank here. I'd highly recommend the salmon and avoado rolls and the unagi. Although I have a soft spot for those...
Food: 7/10

Went to Tanuki on a whim with my friend and we both had a great time! It was a bit busy, however, was still amazing! It is BYOB, so if you want to grab a drink, do it before.
The service was great, even though they were swamped with orders and such.
The Salmon Aloha and Tuna Tartare were our apps and they were amazing. Everything was so fresh and absolutely amazing! We also got two sushi rolls which were fantastic! I highly recommend checking out this place and stopping in!

Great little spot with fantastic food. The shumai (shrimp dumplings) were so good we ordered them again straight away! The maki were beautifully presented and delicious, and the portion sizes were generous. Excellent service and great atmosphere too - we’d love to come back next time we’re in Chicago.

Amazing service and delicious food! We ordered 6 different maki rolls and they were all so fresh and tasty. It was my sisters birthday and they went ABOVE and beyond making her feel special with a handwritten card placement and some complimentary mochi with a candle to blow out. Will definitely be going again and recommending to everyone!

Small sushi joint with fresh fish. I especially enjoyed the o roll. The Thai iced tea was great. They also use metal utensils which was a nice touch.

Delicious simply delicious. Had the pad thai, drunken noodles, fire dragon roll, and the grisly Godzilla. I am definitely going to be a regular here. So cozy and intimate.

The service and food here are phenomenal. We made a reservation and ordered off the special menu for Chicago restaurant week. I could not finish all the dishes but really wanted to, they were so good! The best thing was the tuna poke with the guacamole and chips — it sounds so strange but goes together SO WELL. Also the miso soup is served in a large portion in a mug and it is delightful

I had my birthday dinner at Tanuki sushi with large group of people and we loved everything. Sushi was fresh, well decorated, asian hot dishes were also very tasty. I also liked the vibe and music, everyone who worked there was super friendly. Recommend to everyone who likes sushi and asian food. It’s a gem in the neighborhood

My wife loves sushi and I looked for a place that might also accommodate my taste buds. We came in right at 5pm on a Wednesday and only one table had guest but we were asked if we had reservations, lol. We didn’t and she sat us almost anywhere we wanted. Wife ordered Sushi Plater special and I found a teriyaki chicken dinner (cooked not raw) with steamed rice, salad and miso soup. We both loved the food and ambience here and would visit again if ever in Chicago.

Nice date night vibe. Tables were really close together but they appeared to be spacing guests out as much as they could. Everything we tried was very good. Dinner cost more than I expected but we enjoyed it!

Looking a place to have some cool sushi last night. Always pass by this restaurant when taking the EL but never tried it. My wife and I decided we wanted to eat inside the restaurant since it was humid outside. Got in and got out. The inside of the restaurant smelled like moth balls. Maybe from all the rain we had the day before. We sat outside our server was really nice. All in all the food was great which what we came for. Will definitely swing by again if we have a taste for sushi. The sushi are priced well and the rolls have more fish and wrapped in thin layer of rice (no cheating here). Also, BYOB the best.
