Before I came to South Philly Barbacoa I thought I knew what I good taco tasted like - the homemade corn tortilla alone blew my mind. I could eat those tortillas alone anytime! The barbacoa was delicious and just the right amount of juicy. And the agua frescas were the perfect pairing. Great service and great homey vibe.
The Barbacoa was delicious. We got there around 12:15 on a Sunday. Waited in line for about 40 minutes. It was worth the wait. There was a little cart outside. We used that as a table. Know what you want before you get inside.

Got here on Sunday around 9:40am, waited in line for about 30min. Food was ready in about 10-15min. The portions are generous. Tortillas are handmade and made with what I assume is Nixtamal. The consomé was good but felt a bit spicy for me though I can’t handle spicy usually. Ordered lamb barbacoa and got what I grew up calling “carnitas” (I grew up in northeast Mexico). Not impressed with the meat. It felt a bit dry and did not have much flavor even though you could see condiments on the meat. If you grew up in Mexico (depending on the region) you might find this overrated.

Very delicious lamb tacos. Both types of the lamb tacos they have is very delicious. Didn’t try the soup but saw a lot of people ordered it. Maybe next time.
Update: We did manage to go to the place again. This time we got the half kilo deal which comes with 12 tortillas. The lamb was just spectacular. The consomé was a bit too salty and I was a bit disappointed with the tortillas since they were hard around the edges.

Absolutely delicious! True authentic ???? Mexican cuisine! I saw a food show years ago and saw that Philadelphia had a local legend. I have been dying to eat here ever since. The story of the restaurants owner is amazing but thats for different time, or just find her episode on Netflix. The restaurant is on the corner in South Philly so parking is tough if you think you will be just parking out front. There was a line at the door ???? at 10:30 AM. YES THAT'S RIGHT A LINE AT THE DOOR AT 10:30AM! The restaurant opens at 5:30 AM Saturdays and Sundays during COVID. They close at 3:00 PM or until they sell out of food. Hence the line at 10:30 AM. So do yourself a favor and get there early. The menu is very simple with just a handful of items. Tacos are there main item. The do offer a Veggie taco ????. The tortillas are handmade organic, non-gmo corn that is grown in Lancaster, PA. Trust me you can tell the difference. Side note, they have 3-4 people just making tortillas. The meat is cut fresh right in front of you. They give you an abundance of sides for the tacos ????. The staff are wonderful. You will not be disappointed.

Food was incredible! I knew the moment that I walked in that it was going to be a great experience. Ordered the 1/2 kilo to share with friends. Tortillas are fresh pressed and made on the flat top. Chef Cristina came around and said hello. Service was great! We will be back for sure.

I went on a trip to Philly for the weekend. We got two Barbacoa tacos, two tacos of another meat, consomé and chips and guac. Everything was solid, but here is my issue. $5 a taco is ridiculous. I read a review from 11 months ago saying they were pricey at $4. I just can’t justify $5 a taco no matter how good, and while the barbacoa was juicy and extremely tender, I wasn’t blown away. The consomé was good but didn’t have any meat in it. With all that being said the staff was very friendly and I enjoyed myself. I Went at 1:30 on a Sunday and had no issues waiting in a super long line.

Went today for the first time, and I will be back regularly! I have never had authentic meat-based Mexican dishes before due to religious constraints, and was amazed to learn that all meat here has been halal since 2019. The gesture really shows the business’ dedication to being inclusive, and whether you’re Muslim or not, the food here is fantastic!! Definitely stop by if you’re in the area

This place lives up to all of the hype! We got 1/2kilo of barbacoa which came with all of the fixin's, steamy warm tortillas, and consomme soup from the delicious meat drippings. The lamb flavor in the soup is so beautiful. Also got orange juice and pineapple juice - both so yummy but the pineapple juice is a must try! Hostess was the sweetest ☺️
