Schilos German-Texan Restaurant Reviews

We’ve tried both breakfast and lunch items on the menu, and we don’t think we’ll be back honestly. It’s great that it’s a landmark, but the food isn’t much to rave about really.

My husband got the Sweet Cream Pancakes with an egg and bacon. He said he liked it, just a classic pancake meal. I got the Chicken & Biscuits only because it was the only thing that stood out to me. The biscuits were moist, thankfully. I added a side of hash browns which were nothing special. The gravy had a nice peppery kick to it but was really salty, every bite I took I had to follow it with a sip of my drink. The chicken cutlet itself was not good. It was dry, even with the gravy I did not like it.

The pretzels were a hard pass, they were pretty stale and a little hard to chew and the beer cheese wasn’t too special either. A little too thick for our liking. My husband got a bacon cheeseburger, and he just said it was a basic burger. Nothing to rave about. I got the coveted Reuben, and it was pretty good. I can see why it’s a favorite. I’d like to add that the root beer is delicious.

We went here for lunch on a Tuesday. The wait was around 30 minutes, but was definitely worth it. We had the hot dog basket, the sausage & cheese sampler platter, and the pretzel with beer cheese. The footlong hot dog was wrapped in bacon and then covered with chili and pulled pork. The sausage plate was very tasty and the pretzel were hot and fresh. We had plenty of food left over for take home.

This was a fun place to eat. It is the oldest restaurant in San Antonio and had a warm atmosphere. Our server was very friendly and conversational. They have yummy root beer, sausages and chicken and biscuits. We also liked their club sandwich. It is a great location to the Alamo and river walk.

Fabulous! Fast! Friendly! Ordered shiner seasonal and the Hefe. The pretzel with beer cheese and the wienershnitzel. Carrot salad was bomb. Potato salad was great the green beans were fresh the veal and gravy was nice and crispy. Great place to get your German fix and beer!

Being a local I have a big heart for Schilo's German being the oldest restaurant in San Antonio. Been operating in downtown SA since 1917. The lunch plates and sandwiches are great. Sometimes I'll go for a Ruben sandwich, Schnitzel, Sausage, or Meat Loaf. My favorite is the Split Pea soup and homemade super tasty root beer (The Best Ever). The staff and servers are very friendly. If you're downtown, do give Schilo's a try. You'll be happy you did.

This restaurant kept coming up in my searches for "Must Visit Restaurants in San Antonio". Unfortunately, we just were not impressed. We waited 30 minutes to be seated on a Monday around noon. It took our server quite some time to make her way to our table once seated. We got the deviled eggs as an app(that came after our meals were served...) and they lacked flavor. My husband and daughter had sausages that they thought were decent but the fries were severely undercooked. I had the reuben which was good but kind of small for the price. Our service was definitely lacking with no drink refills and no one ever checking on us after our food was delivered despite one of the sausages being wrong. My daughter just ate it anyway as we were tired of waiting.
I do want to say that we did speak with a manager who was very apologetic, comped our meal and even gave us a slice of cheesecake for dessert. Excellent customer service from her! Hence the 4 stars instead of the 3 I would have given.

Schilo’s is absolutely amazing! You may have to wait a bit to be seated, but it is definitely worth it. We sat at the bar and our waiter was very friendly and gave us lots of information about the restaurant and San Antonio. Everything from our pretzels with beer cheese, schnitzel, and burger was delicious. Many of their stuff is house made as well like their ranch and hot mustard. And make sure to get a mug of root beer (which is also house made)! My partner and I are already planning a day trip back to San Antonio just to eat here.

Food was very good. The Ruben was a perfect amount of corn beef and sauerkraut. Although not plentiful it did the trick. The bacon wrapped krautdog was also very good. Tried a piece of cheesecake and it did not disappoint. There was a woman who really kept the staff on thier toes. The server was good and her last day so kudos to her for not slacking.

Really good overall. Came here as it was close to our hotel to discover that its truly a gem of a spot. Enjoyed some biscuit and gravy with fried chicken. Everyone else also had a great plate of food that can be summed up as yummy. Didn't get the root beer but not regretting as many said its really good there.

We got placed in the wait-list around 11am and got seated at the bar until 12pm. The server took some time to get our order, but it was understandable as she was quite busy. The food was decent; we ordered the Pioneer Buttermilk Pancakes, I had a cappuccino and my boyfriend had a vanilla latte. The eggs were done perfectly, the ham was delicious, but the bacon was a bit dry. The drinks were good and were served quickly. The pancakes themselves were decent and very filling, with a nice old-fashioned flavor. All in all, the food was good but it was nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps ordering something different would have made me change my opinion, but for the Pioneer Buttermilk Pancakes I can only say that it was alright.
